MMTC Seminar presented byTobias FridholmHow to evaluate innovation policies for societal transformation? Challenges and a proposed model.
Description: During the last decade, innovation policymakers across Europe have extended their scope. Besides supporting growth and welfare, they now also want to drive more fundamental change in society, the economy, and the environment: a most complex and long-term task. Challenges arise. One of the consequences: New evaluation approaches are needed. This is an attempt to outline a structured and practical approach for such evaluation, based on identified challenges and conditions that frame the field of innovation policy evaluation. LaTeX:Overleaf like Microsoft Word but betterDeveloped by a mathematician of MIT in the 1980s, the platform Overleaf is designed to make your writing experience easier when it gets difficult. No complicated Macros, formula functions or document formatting. Just start writing and the program does formatting for you! Perfect for those stuck in writing tasks, those lazy and those with complicated courses. Get inspired on how to write math functions and graphs like normal text and don't care about formatting anymore. The programme is used by business, industry and academia worldwide. Even many JU professors use it daily. But we students at JU learn about it way too late. Let's change that and make our lifes a little easier. Everyone can use a complementary alternative to Word. "About the speaker": The lecture is held by Lion, but in cooperation with Career Center who will offer you a free lunch if you sign up before March 18th. If you register after, you are more than welcome to join, but lunch can not be guaranteed! When: Monday March 25th 12.15-1 pm in B3051, Jönköping International Business School. MMTC Research Seminar presented by Guénola Nonet & Dinara Tokbaeva.Guénola & Dinara are presenting their research titled as “A journey towards sustainability: Theoretical and empirical perspectives”.
Although sustainability reporting is increasing, policies and reporting standards are currently focusing mainly on organisations’ carbon emissions. Carbon emissions represents only one of the nine planetary boundaries (Stockholm Resilience Centre, 2023). Simultaneously to this increase of corporate sustainability reporting, we also witness an unsustainable increase of carbon emissions, acceleration of the destruction of Earth’s biosphere, massive pollution of our waters and air quality, and extensive soil depletion. Corporations will not achieve an embedded environmental sustainability without a more advanced understanding of the embedded nature of corporations and how to assess organisations’ impact on their ecosystems, including Earth. What economic perspectives and managerial practices could help improve the impact of businesses on Earth’s living system? We suggest new managerial evaluation principles embedded in our planetary boundaries and designed for just and safe societies. To explore how to support organisations to remain within our planetary boundaries, we discuss three perspectives: (1) An embedded perspective: grounded in new economics frameworks such as the doughnut economics framework we review how economic principles can support an approach embedded in Earth’s planetary boundaries. (2) An organisational sustainability journey presenting the various sustainability phases for organisations. (3) An individual perspective looking at the role of individuals and their needed expertise and skills to support the transition of organisations and help remain within our planetary boundaries.
Authors would like to acknowledge Associate Professor Mark Edwards for his contribution.
The paper is in the early stage of development. Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |

MMTC Research Seminar presented by Tim Risse, Madeleine Marie Meurer, and Matthias Waldkirch.Tim, Madeleine, and Matthias are presenting their research titled as “Digital sherlocks vs. fake news: how online communities collectively identify deceptive narratives”. “It’s the frailty of genius. It needs an audience” (Sherlock Holmes)
Deceptive narratives, such as fake news, spread quickly on digital platforms and pose significant challenges to society by distorting public discourse and influencing political and social outcomes based on misinformation. However, although mostly portrayed as passive consumers of narratives, digital audiences are not powerless in the face of deceptive narratives – they possess collective knowledge, can use critical thinking and community-driven efforts to discern and counteract false information. In two studies, we examine, based on Truth Default Theory (TDT), how audiences actively engage in deception detection. In Study 1, we analyze 1’941 conversations on Reddit where ‘fake news’ had been detected, using LDA topic modeling and selective qualitative insights. This allows us to identify recurring conversation patterns related to audiences’ active role in detecting deceptive narratives. Connecting these insights and TDT, we create propositions on the ‘sherlocking’ of audiences that allows for deception detection. In study 2, we test these propositions based on a quantitative analysis of around 163 million Reddit posts. Together, these studies provide insights into how audiences engage with and scrutinize narratives. Furthermore, we extend TDT, which traditionally focuses on individual deception detection in face-to-face interactions, by considering the collectivism of audiences. The seminar will run in a hybrid format, you can join in room B6046 or on Zoom (see outlook invitation for the zoom link or contact imran.ilyas@ju.se) Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |

POSTPONED - NEW DATE COMING MMTC seminar presented by Maria Arango Kure and Marcel Garz.MMTC seminar presented by Maria Arango Kure and Marcel Garz: “Social Media Gatekeeping: Shadowbanning of Journalists During Political Conflict”.
Digitalization has significantly altered the media landscape, with audiences increasingly using social media platforms for news consumption. This shift has sparked a debate about social media's role when it comes to journalism, where proponents view it as a democratizing force that enhances diversity in opinions, while detractors argue it contributes to misinformation and reduces content quality due to unregulated user-generated content. Shadowbanning, a form of covert censorship where content visibility is selectively reduced, emerges as a controversial tactic used by social media platforms. This practice could skew public opinion and potentially impact democratic processes, especially in politically sensitive contexts. This study aims to explore the implications of shadowbanning in the context of the escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict in October 2023. Using a mixed-method approach that combines computational content analysis and digital ethnography, our research will investigate how shadowbanning affects journalistic content and discourse, differentially impacts professional versus citizen journalists, and the interplay between journalistic practices and shadowbanning in shaping public discourse. This exploration is crucial for understanding the broader consequences of social media policies on news dissemination and democracy. Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |

Online seminar hosted by the Data Methods Initiative and MMTC presented by Ulrich MatterUlrich Matter: Search Engines, Online News, and Political Polarization Ulrich is Assistant Professor at the University of St. Gallen, working on topics related to web technologies, data science, quantitative political economics, and online media economics. He is the author of the book "Big Data Analytics: A Guide to Data Science Practitioners Making the Transition to Big Data".
Abstract of the the paper: Algorithmic personalization of information provision has been widely debated, with concerns that it may lead to segregation and political polarization. This study aims to investigate the impact of web search personalization on political polarization, focusing on online news and Google's search engine. We designed two experiments using 300 US-based synthetic web users, or "bots," with a human-like appearance and randomized individual characteristics, who were active for a 12-month period. Our findings reveal that web search personalization indeed intensifies informational segregation between users with liberal and conservative political preferences, as well as between users with varying privacy settings. However, our results suggest that the likelihood of an increased polarization due to personalized search results is nevertheless low. It also addresses the moderating role of government financial support as an external ecosystem factor and social integration mechanisms (SIMs) as a firm capability of this relationship. Firms increasingly adopt EIs to boost competitiveness and achieve sustainability. However, previous literature shows mixed results on how EIs impact firm performance and what conditions and mechanisms hold this relationship positive. The study distinguishes between two types of environmental innovations—cleaner integrated technologies and end-of-pipe technologies— examining their respective impacts on firm’s total factor productivity (TFP) (as a technical efficiency indicator) and net sales (as a financial performance indicator). Using data from 6,843 Swedish firms from the 2018 and 2020 waves of the Community Innovation Survey, we apply hierarchical regression analysis and conduct additional robustness checks, such as the Heckman two-step model, to explore these dynamics. The findings indicate that cleaner integrated technologies have a more substantial positive effect on firm performance compared to end-of-pipe technologies. Public financial support plays a crucial role in strengthening EIs’ effect on firm performance. However, such funds also exhibit insignificant or even strongly negative direct effects on firm performance in some cases (e.g., TFP for the former and net sales for the latter). Conversely, SIMs, despite showing a direct positive influence on performance, do not significantly moderate the relationship between EIs and economic outcomes. The study concludes that investments in cleaner technologies, combined with well-aligned external knowledge integration, are key for firms aiming to leverage environmental innovations for competitive advantage. These results have implications for both policy and business strategies concerning the deployment of public funds and the fostering of firm’s internal capabilities for managing environmental innovation. The seminar will run in a hybrid format, you can join in room B6046 or on Zoom Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |

Data Methods Initiative seminar presented by Vejune Zemaityte: Data-driven film industry researchDr Vejune Zemaityte is a Senior Research Fellow in Film Data Analytics at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School (BFM), Tallinn University, Estonia. Vejune uses data analysis and visualisation techniques, including network analysis, to study global screen industries. She researches film production, theatrical film distribution, film festival circuit, public service television, and historical newsreels. Participation in international film festivals is crucial for films, particularly for independent productions in smaller markets, as they facilitate critical recognition, audience engagement, and distribution opportunities. Our research utilizes the Cinando database, managed by Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes, to conduct data-driven analyses of the festival circuit, modeling festivals as a global network and examining the diversity and public value of festival programming. This investigation helps understand why certain films succeed internationally and includes a discussion on the challenges and insights gained from working with "found" data not originally intended for research purposes. This talk will discuss some of the quantitative approaches we applied to the film festival database, highlighting not only our results but also the process of working with so-called “found” data created for reasons other than research. MMTC seminar with Karel Deneckere, Bart Henssen, Carla Machado Gonçalves, Marcela Ramirez Pasillas.MMTC seminar with Karel Deneckere, Bart Henssen, Carla Machado Gonçalves, Marcela Ramirez Pasillas.
Karel is presenting their research project titled: “Shared purpose? The family business as a sustainable systemic ‘irritator’ in the sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem”.
Within the context of the permacrisis, the notion of Sustainable Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (SEEs) combines an ecosystem’s approach with the role of businesses in driving society’s transformation towards sustainability. And while embracing a sustainable systemic mindset is recognized as a key component to fulfilling the purpose of sustainability, little is know about how such a shared purpose is developed among stakeholders in SEEs. Starting from the premise that SEEs favor stakeholders with a systems-oriented shared purpose, this paper aims to investigate the role of the family business in inducing a change in the collective mindset of the SEE. This leads to the following question: How does a family business induce a sustainable purpose among SEE-stakeholders? To answer this, we adopt Niklas Luhmann’s systemic theory of organization and, in particular, his concept of irritation; which refers to a process in which an organization is perturbated or confused by its environment and thus stimulated to change. Our analysis focuses on the case of a Belgian family business that seeks to establish a SEE as a part of its sustainability transformation. We have conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 13 local stakeholders. Preliminary results show that the family business takes up the role of system irritator. It sought to ‘irritate’ the local stakeholders by undertaking a series of actions, which resulted form the mapping of common themes and concerns connected to the increased awareness of the permacrisis effects. The themes challenged existing meanings and ideas and raised awareness of the strength of potential joint action. Moreover stakeholders became aware that they were part of an interconnected local ecosystem. The seminar will run in a hybrid format, you can join in room B6046 or on Zoom Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |

MMTC seminar with Evy Van Lancker, Yasmine Van Heghe, and Mirjam Knockaert (Ghent University)MMTC seminar with Evy Van Lancker, Yasmine Van Heghe, and Mirjam Knockaert (Ghent University)
Evy is presenting the research titled as “Help, my work keeps changing!: The impact of pivoting on employee wellbeing and turnover”.
Over the past decades, scholars have increasingly paid attention to wellbeing in the entrepreneurship context – a context that offers a unique environment for people to flourish and develop. As such, scholarly work has been focusing on how entrepreneurs’ wellbeing is influenced by the intricacies of entrepreneurship, such as uncertainty or autonomy. To this date, the literature has however largely neglected an important actor whose wellbeing is likely also affected by the entrepreneurial context, namely early employees in entrepreneurial firms. Only recently, scholars have started to generate insights into wellbeing of employees in SMEs and growing firms. Furthermore, joiners – early nonfounding startup employees – remain largely overlooked. This is surprising as joiners face many challenges linked to early-stage entrepreneurial firms, such as a lack of routines, high levels of uncertainty, and continuous change. In this paper, we study the impact of pivoting (i.e., fundamentally changing business model aspects) on joiner turnover intentions. We build on the Job-Demands Resources (JD-R) model that suggests that characteristics specific to a work setting or occupation can either be defined as a demand or as a resource. In this light, we develop a multi-level model, proposing a cross-level indirect effect of pivoting on joiner turnover intentions via joiner emotional exhaustion, contingent on founder relational energy (i.e., “a heightened level of psychological resourcefulness generated from interpersonal interactions that enhances one’s capacity to do work”, here in the interactions between a joiner and founder). To achieve our research objectives, we use a time-lagged multilevel research design and collaborate with local accelerator programs to invite Flemish entrepreneurial firms to participate. In specific, we survey both founders and joiners by means of two survey waves, with a three-month time-lag in between. With this study, we aim to contribute to the entrepreneurship literature. In specific, our objective is to provide insights into the influence of firm-level dynamics, such as pivoting, as well as founder-level factors, such as founder relational energy, on joiner behavior. As such, we hope to add to the ongoing conversation on wellbeing in entrepreneurship by bringing a multilevel perspective to it. Similarly, we hope to provide insights into joiner retention, a highly strategic, yet understudied aspect of HRM in entrepreneurial firms. The seminar will run in a hybrid format, you can join in room B6046 or on Zoom Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |

MMTC resarch Seminar presented by Agostino ManduchiMMTC resarch Seminar presented by Agostino Manduchi
Agostino is presenting the research titled as “Search and price dispersion with rationally inattentive buyers”.
In the study, Agostino investigates a model in which inattentive buyers can elicit price offers before purchasing a product. Inattentiveness follows from the cost of the attention that the buyers devote to their price-gathering problem. The only equilibrium of a version of the model with fully attentive buyers features the "Diamond paradox" of monopoly pricing, in which each buyer elicits a single offer. By contrast, the model of the paper features an active equilibrium with price dispersion, in which some buyers elicit multiple prices. The limiting behavior for a vanishing cost of attention is also considered.
The seminar will run in a hybrid format, you can join in room B6046 or on Zoom Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |
