Seminar: Healthcare as a Learning Health System

Healthcare as a Learning Health System (LHS) to Address Complex Challenges

Against the backdrop of today’s major challenges in health and social care, this seminar introduces the concept of Learning Health Systems (LHS) – what they are in theory and how they can be applied in practice to support continuous improvement through coproduction and learning, powered by data and new technologies.

During the seminar, we will explore how improvement science, implementation science, and coproduction are interconnected and contribute to developing a well-functioning LHS. We will also introduce the emerging field of academic Learning Health Systems, where universities and healthcare organizations collaborate to drive change, and discuss the competencies needed for the LHS researchers of the future.

The seminar is led by Katherine Stevenson from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and Andreas Gremyr from Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg.

Katherine Stevenson taught in the Master’s Programme in Quality Improvement and Leadership at the School of Health and Welfare, Jönköping University, between 2009 and 2018, where she was responsible for several courses in improvement knowledge. She is now a postdoctoral researcher in Canada and will share current research from the University of Saskatchewan while also exploring opportunities for international collaboration.

Andreas Gremyr has a background as a psychologist and improvement leader in psychiatry. He holds a Master’s degree in Quality Improvement and a PhD from the School of Health and Welfare, focusing on LHS for psychiatry. In recent years, he has divided his time between a postdoctoral position at the Anderson Center for Health System Excellence (Cincinnati, USA) – contributing to the design and evaluation of a new LHS for bipolar disorder – and his current role as head of the ePsychiatry unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The unit develops and disseminates LHS-inspired approaches that support patients, clinicians, and managers in achieving more data-driven care and development.
