Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Ehsan Ghassemali

Welcome to attend Ehsan Ghassemali's trial lecture for appointment as associate professor on January 13th, 11 am - 12 pm. Due to prevailing circumstances you may participate in the lecture via Zoom. Link to Zoom: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/67076382081?pwd=RnN5TnhCY1NXdnhNVWRQR0QwcGEyUT09

Titel of the lecture

In Quest of High-Performance Metals

Abstract:

Lighter, yet larger aeroplanes for net-zero emission flights; development of modern renewable energy production and storage; crash-resistant vehicles. These are just a few examples of technological advancements that are only possible to achieve using novel high-performance materials capable of handling harsh working conditions. Developing such materials also minimizes the need for service, maintenance, and re-manufacturing, thus improving the sustainability aspects in grand societal and industrial challenges. This lecture presents the most modern strategies for the design and development of next-generation high-performance metallic materials (alloys). The research integrates computational modelling as well as experimental studies and has huge potential for interdisciplinary collaborations. These studies accelerates industrial innovation by opening new horizons for developing methodological tools, with far-reaching implications in strategic sectors ranging from energy storage to transportation and aerospace engineering.

Welcome to attend the lecture!

Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Jakob Olofsson

Welcome to attend Jakob Olofsson's trial lecture for appointment as associate professor on January 18th, 11 am - 12 pm. Due to prevailing circumstances you may participate in the lecture via Zoom. Link to Zoom: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/66415769026?pwd=RGFlMEVlVDlJSlpTWmpBQzZncHBndz09

Titel of the lecture:
Casting, dinosaur skulls, cookies and trees: When differences unite into extraordinary structures

Abstract:
Although dinosaur skulls, cookies and trees may seem essentially different from metal castings, they share the common feature of having local variations in their internal material structure. In natural designs, these structural variations are tailored to enable extraordinary performance and damage tolerance.

This lecture presents research that aims to understand the effect of local material variations in metal castings, and enable computational predictions of heterogeneous microstructure-based material behaviour and the performance of castings in use. The research spans over multiple length scales (from macro to nano-scale) as well as different research disciplines, and enables new methodologies to design and optimize industrial castings that, just like natural designs, utilize these local variations to enable extraordinary structures.

Welcome to attend the lecture!

Title: Socioeconomic Factors influencing the Spatial Spread of COVID-19 in the United States

******************************************************************************************************************

Date: Monday, 15 February
Time: 12:10-12:55

Room: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/6596546911

Abstract

As the COVID-19 pandemic has progressed in the U.S., "hotspots" have been shifting geographically over time to suburban and rural counties showing a high prevalence of the disease. We analyze daily U.S. county-level variations in COVID-19 confirmed case counts to evaluate the spatial dependence between neighboring counties. We find strong evidence of county-level socioeconomic factors influencing the spatial spread. We show the potential of combining spatial econometric techniques and socioeconomic factors in assessing the spatial effects of COVID-19 among neighboring counties.

Brown Bag Seminar in Economics and Finance

You are welcome to join us for the “Brown Bag Seminar in Economics and Finance” presented by

Joacim Tåg from Research Institute of Industrial Economics (IFN), Stockholm

The title is: CEO Health and Corporate Governance

Date: Monday, 21 February
Time: 12:10-12:55

Room:
https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/65965469113

Abstract

Boards hire and fire CEOs based on imperfect information. Using comprehensive data on 28 cohorts in Sweden, we analyze the role of a potentially important attribute—CEO health—in corporate governance. Boards hire CEOs who are healthier than other high-skill professionals, in particular in mental health. After hiring, CEOs’ health develops similarly to a control group of executives. Health predicts turnover, measured at appointment and during tenure. These results are consistent with boards appointing CEOs with health robust enough to withstand the pressures of the job, correcting mismatches occurring at the time of appointment, and responding expediently to health shocks.

Abstract

In this paper, we show that multinational firms have an incentive to transfer intellectual property with an uncertain return to a low-tax jurisdiction when the treatment of losses is asymmetric at home. By doing so, firms avoid potentially negative profits at home by transferring its intellectual property to a foreign affiliate before learning the profitability of the asset. The results also show that firms can have similar incentives to transfer intellectual property to a jurisdiction where tax rates are comparable or even higher than at home if the foreign jurisdiction offers a more symmetric treatment of losses.

Title: The medium is the message: learning channels, financial literacy, and stock market participation

Date: Monday, March 15
Time: 12:10-12:55

Zoom: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/65965469113

Abstract
This paper investigates the effects of learning channels on stock market participation. More specifically, we investigate the direct effects of learning about financial matters from one’s private network, financial advisors, and the media, as well as the interactive effects of financial literacy and these learning channels. Analyzing a unique cross-section data that combine survey data and bank register data on retail investors, we find that media are the only learning channel that increases the likelihood of stock market participation. Interactions point to the joint importance of financial literacy and media as a learning channel for individuals’ stock market participation. Constructing theme–based literacy measures, we conclude that only financial knowledge related to investments in risky assets affects stock market participation. Our findings suggest implications to policymakers when designing financial education programs.

Title: Time-varying effects of bond supply on the yield curve

Abstract
We propose an arbitrage-free term structure model with time-varying effects of bond supply on the yield curve. Our assertion is that shocks to bond supply have stronger effects on term premia when investors are more averse to duration risk and require higher premium to hold bonds. Time variation in duration risk aversion is introduced in our model through the parameters that drive the dynamics of the market prices of risk and that are associated with the bond supply factor. Duration risk aversion increases with the level of bond supply itself, and with current and expected short-rates, and decreases with the effective lower bound, and with changes in investors’ wealth. We also use the model to evaluate the term premium effects of Bank of England’s asset purchase programmes. Results suggest that the programmes announced from February 2009 to August 2016 jointly reduced the ten-year gilt term premium by about 80 basis points.

Title:

Monetary and Social Incentives in Multi-Tasking: The Ranking Substitution Effect

Date: Monday, March 29
Time: 12:10-12:55

Zoom: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/65965469113

Abstract

Rankings are intended as incentive tools on labor markets. Yet, when agents perform multiple tasks - not all of which can be ranked with respect to performance -, rankings might have unintended side-effects. Based on a dynamic model of multi-tasking, we present an experiment with financial professionals in which we identify hidden ranking costs when performance in one task is ranked while in another prosocial task it is not. We find that subjects lagging behind (leading) in the ranked task devote less (more) effort to the prosocial task.

Higher seminar: What happens to learning design processes in the digital transformation to online teaching and learning (during Covid-19)?

Assistant professor Lillian Buus, VIA University College, research leader of the enivronment Learning & IT

I have an interest in Learning Design as a methodology for designing for digital mediated learning, and seen in the light of Covid-19 and the rapid digital transformation from traditional teaching to online teaching I have seen some interesting findings in a national research project on covid-19 and experiences with online teaching and learning. I would like to present some of these findings and relate them to the known facts on how to design for learning in general and from

Title: The Role of R&D in the Effectiveness of Renewable Energy Determinants: A Spatial Econometric Analysis

Date: Monday, April 19
Time: 12:10-12:55

Zoom: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/65965469113

ABSTRACT
This study investigates the effects of renewable energy determinants on various renewable energy resources. The empirical results are based on data from 31 Asia-Pacific countries observed from 2000 to 2018. Different diagnostic tests indicate the existence of spatial effects in the renewable energy model. The spatial Durbin model with the time-period and spatial fixed effects was selected for analysis. Scrutinizing empirical studies suggest a lack of theoretical consensus on how renewable energy determinants work. By examining how R&D affects different renewable energy resources, this study attempts to fill the research gap. In addition, the R&D environment is an important factor in determining the effects of GDP and the development of financial markets and institutions. R&D enhancement reduces the impacts of market expansion on hydropower; however, such effects are incremental for solar, wind, bioenergy, and geothermal energy resources. In an environment with a low level of R&D, financial development has positive effects on hydropower generation and negative impacts on other renewable energy types. However, the expansion of R&D expands reverses such effects gradually. The empirical literature shows that different results are obtained for different countries at different levels of R&D. Furthermore, trade openness has been a positive factor in the development of all renewable energy types, while the positive effects of CO2 emissions are observed only on hydropower. The results also revealed the negative (positive) impacts of GDP per capita in neighboring countries with a higher (lower) level of R&D on the development of renewable energy of the origin country.

WebLearn: Polymer recycling - why a challenge?

Polymers are the marvelous invention of the last century. The way they have cast an impact on us and transformed our lives is unprecedented. Polymers are everywhere and life without them is unthinkable. However, they are produced in such huge quantities that they have overwhelmed the world’s ability to deal with the pollution they have already created. In the future, their production will further accelerate owing to their lightweight and barrier properties.
In this WebLearn webinar, we will focus on the recycling challenges of polymers in general and packaging-grade polymers in particular.
This webinar is specifically useful for dProcess engineers, environmentalists, End-user of plastics, salespeople, and everyone with an interest in polymer recycling. Everyone with interest in the topic are also welcomed.
The webinar, which is in English, is followed by 30 min group discussion and networking.

EUFBC Seminar - Valentino D Angelo

Welcome to join the 18th EuFBC seminar titled "Family Agents" presented by Valentino D’Angelo (Mario Daniele Amore and Alessandro Minichilli), from AIDAF-EY Chair in Strategic Management
in Family Business in memory of Alberto Falck, Bocconi University.

ABSTRACT – Several firms around the world are led by multiple CEOs. This observation has spurred a literature on the strategic implications of shared leadership. Our study investigates how co-CEOs affect corporate investment under different conditions of ownership and governance. We argue that, while family firms have more parsimonious investment policies than non-family firms, the presence of multiple CEOs raises overinvestment in family firms due to a potential divergence of personal agendas. Our analysis confirms that co-CEOs are conducive of excessive investment activities in family firms. Yet, we find that the positive effect of co-CEOs on family firms’ overinvestment is lower when the firm is subject to strong board monitoring, and higher when the co-CEOs belong to different family branches. Contrary to the view that family actors represent a homogeneous group with aligned interests and preferences, our study shows that the fragmentation of leadership among multiple actors may be costly for the family business.

Brown Bag Seminar in Economics and Finance

Brown Bag Seminar in Economics and Finance presented by Anton Hasselgren, Jönköping International Business School

Title: Is interest in climate change affected by perceived economic conditions?

Date: Monday, April 26
Time: 12:10-12:55

Zoom: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/65965469113

Abstract
In this early working paper, we show that perceived economic conditions (sentiment) positively predicts the amount of Google searches on climate-change related topics. The effect is unrelated to business cycle fluctuations and abnormal weather conditions, and is not sensitive to the choice of Google search terms. The results help us understand the drivers of public interest and can inform policy makers and change management strategies.

Brown Bag Seminar in Economics and Finance

Brown Bag Seminar in Economics and Finance with Johan Karlsson, JIBS/CeFEO

Title: "To be or Not to Be: The Entrepreneur in Endogenous Growth Theory".

(Authors: Dan Johansson, Magnus Henrekson and Johan Karlsson)

Date: Monday, May 3

Time: 12:10-12:55

Zoom: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/65965469113

Abstract:

We examine the conceptualization of entrepreneurs in neo-Schumpeterian growth theory, which has reintroduced entrepreneurs into mainstream economics. Specifically, we analyze how neo-Schumpeterians relate to the contradiction between the entrepreneur-centered view of Schumpeter (1934) and the entrepreneurless framework of Schumpeter (1942), with the two frameworks entailing vastly different economic and policy implications. The analysis is based on a review of approximately 750 peer-reviewed articles over the period 1990–2018. The articles were identified using text mining methodology and supervised machine learning. The results show that the literature leans towards Schumpeter (1942); innovation returns are modeled as following an ex ante known probability distribution. By assuming that the outcomes of innovation activities are (probabilistically) deterministic, the Schumpeterian entrepreneur becomes redundant. In addition, the literature abstracts from genuine uncertainty, thus evading central issues regarding the economic function of the entrepreneur, especially with respect to disruptive innovations, ownership, and profits. To incorporate genuine uncertainty, the literature needs to adopt a broader conceptual foundation that goes beyond equilibrium modeling.

Title:

The Great Recession: Sectors, Efficiency, Technological innovation, Capital deepening, and Labour mobility

Date: Monday, 10 May
Time: 12:10-12:55

Room: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/65965469113
Fix Meeting-ID for Spring 1, 2021: 659 654 691 13

Abstract

We propose a new decomposition of aggregate productivity growth that accounts for sectoral efficiency and technology changes as well as capital deepening and provide new evidence on the sources of productivity growth in OECD countries.

Extended Abstract

In this paper, we analyze aggregate labor productivity of developed economies in three periods: (i) years before (2002-2006), (ii) leading to (2006-2009), and (iii) recovery from the global financial crisis (GFC) (2009-2014). First, we decompose aggregate productivity growth into components attributable to intra-sectoral productivity growth effect (within component) and effect of employment share reallocation that is split into the static and dynamic components. We use data for 10 sectors from 26 countries. We confirm that the within component is the key driver of labor productivity growth in good years and in the recovery period. However, we find that it is the major culprit in years leading to GFC. We, therefore, study the factors that affect the within component by employing a non-parametric production frontier approach to conceptually decompose the within component into components attributable to efficiency change, technological change, and capital deepening. The retrenchment in technological progress followed by efficiency losses plays on average the most important role in explaining the collapse of productivity growth in years leading to GFC. Efficiency losses were highest in ICT, manufacturing, construction, utilities, and wholesale. In the recovery period, technological progress has played the largest role in manufacturing, finance, information, and wholesale. In particular, the rate of technological progress in manufacturing has surpassed its level in the pre-crisis period. Productivity is, however, still mired by efficiency losses with exceptions of the agriculture and construction sectors. Capital deepening kept on driving up productivity in all periods. Capital deepening contribution has been especially prominent in the recovery period. To our knowledge, this is the first study that uses sectoral data on capital to analyze the role of sectoral dynamics in terms of efficiency, technology, and capital deepening in aggregate productivity growth. Doing so allows to identify the relative role of these three factors to productivity growth.

Higher seminar: DESIGNING FOR SITUATED KNOWLEDGE IN A WORLD OF CHANGE

Professor Nina Bonderup

In this talk, I shall address a basic question in education:
How can students learn to put knowledge, developed in one context, to use in other contexts?

This question poses a major challenge for the educational systems of today because of the following conundrum: in contemporary society, people are required to traverse a range of different settings with different competence demands, and they often have to utilize knowledge across these different settings. However, several strands of research (e.g. practice theory, situated learning, embodied cognition) join in pointing out that knowledge is situated, i.e. acquires form and content from the context in which it is learnt.

Transfer of knowledge across settings is therefore no straightforward matter. It involves transformation of the situatedly learned knowledge so that it fits the new setting. Learning to do so emerges as crucial for students of today, and facilitating transformation becomes a key task for many educational systems.

In the talk, I present research on knowledge transformation, on design principles to support it, and on the implementation of specific learning designs in educational practice. The talk draws on the results of the recent project Designing for situated knowledge in a world of change (2015-2020), financed by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

Brown Bag Seminar in Economics and Finance presented by Almas Heshmati from Jönköping International Business School

Title: Green innovations and patenting renewable energy technologies

Date: Monday, May 24
Time: 12:10-12:55

Abstract
We examine the impact of regulation and policies on green patent generation and evo-lution of renewable energy technologies in the OECD countries. Public and private investment, investment in education, research and development, and environmental regulation are considered. There is considerable variation in innovation systems and investments in renewable energy, and in outcomes. We assess the impact of envi-ronmental stringency and environmental taxes and regulations on renewable energy patents. The considerable heterogeneity requires emphasis on country effects and a separation of general from speci?c green innovation outcomes. We account for country-speci?c innovation factors. A balanced panel of 27 OECD countries is exam-ined between 1990 and 2018. A renewable patent model is estimated by different panel data models and estimation methods. We ?nd considerable sensitivity to model assumptions and inference techniques. The study is suggestive, however, of some renewable energy approaches for achievement of OECD environmental goals.

WebLearn: "Art of Metallography - Color etching"

On June 15, the School of Engineering at Jönköping University will organize the next part of the webinar series WebLearn, “Art of Metallography: Color etching.”

Traditional metallographic preparation of cast iron provides little information about the solidification of the material. Coloretching with Motz reagent reveals the microsegregation patterns of Silicon in the material, which provide a detailed account of the material’s solidification procedure and structure. This Webinar provides practical guidelines on how to apply the color etching method, details about its mechanism, and useful examples of what it can tell us about Cast Iron. After the webinar, the audience is invited to discussions about the color etching technique and its potential applications for industry and research.
This webinar is specifically useful for producers and users of cast iron components, particularly working with material R&D, process control and quality control related to cast iron.

After attending this webinar you will know more about:
* How to color etch cast iron samples with Motz reagent
* How the resulting color patterns emerge and may be interpreted
* How the color etching technique can help characterization of microstructure and diagnostics of casting defects

Register here!

An efficient product realization process for castings, from design idea to finished product, requires a good interaction between the designer and the manufacturer. The designer needs to have a good insight into the casting process and understand the possibilities and limitations that the process puts on geometrical design.

In this webinar, we will provide a foundryman's perspective on the topic “design for casting”. We will follow different steps that an iron foundry takes to evaluate a customer’s design proposal and highlight some points that are important to consider as a designer in order to prepare a design that is suitable for casting, but also reduces the economic cost as well as the environmental impact. We will also discuss tools such as 3D printed sand moulds and simulations can support the design process and make it more efficient.
After the webinar there will be a +30 min group discussion and networking.

After attending this webinar you will know more about:
* How the different aspects of the geometrical design affect the casting process and the work in the foundry
* How a foundry can support the design process for cast components
* How small changes in the design can have a large impact on the cost and environmental impact of a casting

This webinar is specifically useful for designers, purchasers and suppliers of cast components, but also everyone with an interest in product realization and casting in general.

Docent lecture - Paola Sartoretto

Welcome to Paola Sartoretto's associate professor lecture!

Titel:
Communication of the Oppressed - conditions and possibilities for resistant appropriations of media technologies

How do marginalised groups use media as tools for political action? What is the importance of communication for social mobilsation under conditions of oppression? In this lecture I reflect on my ten years of research on activist media and communication within social movements to understand the conditions through which communicative processes can be a way to resist against oppression.

The work of Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, internationally known for his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, foregrounds the discussion in which I establish connections between education, communication and political action. Freire argued that learning to ‘write the word’ is essential to ‘write the world’ and overcome oppression. I argue that in hyper-mediated and unequal contemporary societies writing the world is a communicative process that includes, but is not limited to, resistant appropriations of media technologies by marginalised groups.

Films For Change - RIVERBLUE

Have you ever thought about the far-reaching impact of your consumption habits? Have you ever thought about fashion brands’ role in the spread of unsustainable behaviors?
Have you ever thought about the dangers of impulse buying on Black Friday? Companies including fashion brands ramp up sale volumes by encouraging impulse purchasing, employing a wide variety of psychological tricks to make us buy more. This entails many negative consequences affecting the environment and the various stakeholders along the value chain. We have control of our decisions and each of us can contribute to positive change by not acting on urges induced by marketing.

We want to hear your reflections on this and together work for a better future. Can fashion save the planet? Let us discuss this over a cup of popcorn and great company!

Remember to bring your JU-card to enter the building.

From dream to reality - making it happen. Guest lecture with Jerry Engström

Entrepreneurship Academy happily welcomes you to a guest lecture in entrepreneurship. Take the chance to get new ideas and key information about our spring event E-challenge!

Many of us can probably relate to having a dream to work with our passion – to start our own business or work part-time with our hobby. But where do you start? How do you make it happen?

We have invited Jerry Engström to share his experience and tips on how to go from dream to reality. The mental groundwork that is needed, the first trembling steps and how to level up. This will be relevant for most of us – whether you have an idea you want to get started with or want to listen to what one can do if something pops into mind.

Jerry started his career at the Multinational company Unilever. He was responsible for growing brands like Axe and Dove before becoming Global Marketing Director at Fjällräven and being a part of the global launch. After years of travel and work worldwide, Jerry decided to move home to the High Coast and create FriluftsByn - a careful balance of nature, creativity and community.

Jerry has been nominated Swedens Best Marketing Director, Placebrander of the Year and Countryside Developer of the Year and regularly coaching others to get going with their dreams.

Join us on 2/12 for tips and inspiration. The lecture is primarily aimed at students at JIBS and JTH but is open to all students at JU. Entrance to the lecture is for free, and we offer fika!

Aktiestinsen sponsors the event.

Note: The lecture will be held in English!

EU Wants JU!

Webinars on how to (and why you ought to!) sign up as an expert reviewer for the Horizon Europe Programme.

As part of the strategy to increase and secure the volume of external research funding from the framework programme Horizon Europe, JU will have to build awareness, knowledge, and deeper understanding of the programme – as well as proposal-writing skills - among JU researchers.

Acting as experts and evaluators of Horizon Europe proposals in our research fields is a very efficient way to build an understanding of the evaluator’s logic, how to achieve high scores, and thus spread greater proposal-writing skills among JU researchers.

These 2 webinars each cover:

·         Practical information on how to sign up as an evaluator in the Funding and Tenders platform.

·         Information on what it means to be an expert evaluator: Work-load, remuneration etc.

·         The added value of a) understanding the policy background and the evaluator’s logic, and b) new insights and greater proposal-writing skills for Horizon calls (and for national funding calls as well).

Zoom link to the webinar: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/4636101075

A lot of outdoor projects in preschools and schools show: In the outdoor nature many children and groups of children behave differently than in enclosed spaces and can benefit in various regards. There is a huge range of studies and literature about stimulations, about affordances and corresponding experiences of nature for children’s learning or developmental processes. But is there also a special impact in relation to language development? Are atmospheres and interactions in natural settings supportive in terms of producing, finding and using words?  The talk will deal with that and suggests how a language supporting approach might be conceptualized.

With reference to a project addressing social disadvantaged children in Germany (“Natur bildet”; bsj Marburg) and to the ongoing Erasmus+ project “Early Language Development in Nature (ELaDiNa)” some theoretical ideas and practical examples will be presented.

You are very welcome to join and to discuss.

Martin Vollmar: scientific advisor at bsj Marburg (children and youth organization focusing nature, adventure, body, social disadvantage
