Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Leif-Magnus Jensen

Welcome to attend to Leif-Magnus Jensen's trial lecture for appointment as associate professor on February 25th, 1 pm - 2 pm in E1405, JTH!

The lecture's title is: Broadening distribution – new challenges and new research

Abstract

The new distribution reality challenges the received view of distribution as simply moving a finished product “from factory to consumer.”
In this lecture I present lessons from two quite dissimilar projects and relate them to challenges in supply chains and distribution in particular.

The first project deals with humanitarian logistics, the challenge of setting up supply chains to deal with small or large disasters.  The combination of damage to infrastructure, short time-frames and sometimes hundreds of involved actors makes this a great challenge to logisticians.

Changing tack, I then shortly present results on a project extended service models in the heavy vehicle industry, where the focus is rather on what happens once a product is sold.  How transporters use a heavy vehicle can be as important as how it is made in terms of both what the customer will pay for and sustainability impact.  Finally, I return to implications for distribution research.

Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Eva Johansson

Welcome to attend Eva Johansson's trial lecture for appointment as associate professor on February 25th, 2 pm - 3 pm in E1405 (Gjuterisalen), JTH!

The lecture's titel is: Supply chain design during new product development

Abstract

In many industries, large structural changes affecting the supply chain have taken place over the last decades, for example a greater number of product variants, more customisation, modularisation and outsourcing trends, and global suppliers have become ever more involved in new product development. This has led to many different requirements on the supply chain and if these requirements are not dealt with in coordination with suppliers, industrial engineers and design engineers, there is a risk of sub optimisation. In addition, companies have much to gain from shortening the new product development time to reach the market early with new technology and products. The structural changes affecting the supply chain and the trend towards shorter new product development time have altered the conditions for supply chain design and underlined the importance of integrating supply chain design during new product development. The lecture will present examples of challenges related to supply chain design during new product development but also tools for dealing with these challenges.

Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Carin Rösiö

TRIAL LECTURE FOR APPOINTMENT AS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome to attend Carin Rösiö’s trial lecture for appointment as associate professor on April 6, 10 am – 11 am. Due to prevailing circumstances you may participate in the lecture via Zoom. Join Zoom Meeting https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/879168252

 The lecture's title is:

Changeable production systems - Challenges and opportunities

Abstract

Manufacturing companies need to cope with a growing degree of change. Shorter product life cycles, increasing number of product variants and greater volume variations affect both product development and the associated production systems. In order to maintain competitiveness production systems must often be both flexible and quick to adapt to both planned and un-planned changes. Through production systems characterized by e.g. modularity it is possible to quickly and cost-effectively change and reconfigure production systems to provide the right capacity and functionality on demand. Through a long term-view and a holistic approach when developing production systems, the manufacturing industry can avoid overinvestments and sub-optimization and be better prepared for changes. This lecture will present opportunities and challenges with changeable and reconfigurable production concepts. The lecture will give input to how to develop changeable and reconfigurable production systems to enable efficient processes with a high variation and customization of new products to meet requirements in manufacturing companies.

 The lecture's title is:

Peer-reviewed journal editing as a service to the international human factors and ergonomics research community

Abstract

Publish or perish, despite being a questionable mantra, echoes throughout the research community. Spanning half a dozen volumes, over a period of 8 years, from its launch, the content of the IJHFE, an international peer-reviewed journal in the interdisciplinary field of human factors and ergonomics, has been diverse. This can be seen in terms of topic coverage over the years, as well as country of affiliation of the corresponding authors of the articles. Started primarily as an outlet for publication of ongoing doctoral research, it was only in the latest volume that, together with a former doctoral student, the IJHFE’s editor co-authored a research article, signaling perhaps the threshold of a new stage for the journal. Launch, growth and steady flow are three phases in the history of the journal that can be identified and characterized in terms of the challenges, and, what, in hindsight, may be considered success factors.

MMTC Research Seminar

Welcome to the upcoming MMTC seminar with Olof Brunninge on Wed, June 17th . Please note that the seminar will run 15 min earlier than usual from 11:45-12:45.

Olof will present his project “SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT - Experiences from a virtual mobility project connecting Jönköping, Moscow and Vilnius”.

Would you like to offer your student an exchange experience without having to go abroad? Maybe before their “real” exchange or as a way of adding one more international dimension to your course?

Last year, students from JIBS, Moscow State University and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University engaged in cross-border collaboration to solve teaching cases on Sustainable Management. This was done using ICT without having physical meetings. Olof Brunninge will report from the experiences and address the following questions:

•            How can you add a virtual exchange experience to your course?

•            What learning outcomes can result from such a collaboration?

•            What do you need to think of to make this work?

The research seminar will run as an online seminar.

Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Jessica Elfsberg

Welcome to attend to Jessica Elfsberg's trial lecture for appointment as associate professor!

Titel: Cast Iron Parts in Heavy Duty Vehicles

Abstract:

Heavy Duty Vehicles are vehicles performing some kind of heavy work. Often by transporting goods or transporting people. The vehicles from Scania CV AB have cast iron parts operating under very different conditions. The three cast iron types LGI (Lamellar Graphite Iron), CGI (Compacted Graphite Iron) and SGI (Spheroidal Graphite Iron) are all used by Scania since they are suitable for different applications. Some parts are exposed to high, cyclic, temperatures, other may in some climates experience very low temperatures. Furthermore there are for example high static loads, cyclic loads causing fatigue and different corrosive media to consider. Material properties of interest are not only strength but also thermal conductivity, mechanical damping and oxidation resistance. Material properties are generally  controlled by microstructural features as for example graphite shape and matrix structure. The microstructure is controlled by the chemical composition and by the manufacturing process. However, the properties are also limited by the presence of defects. It is not possible to cast 100% defect free parts, thus the defects need to be considered during the design process.

The development of cast iron parts at Scania focus not only on the actual material properties, but also on the possibility to model their behavior for optimizing the design and estimating their life length at different conditions. Models and tools are developed internally as well as in cooperation with academic partners. Two examples are the correlation between strength and microstructure for two cast iron types (LGI and CGI) and a diagram describing the static strength as a function of defect size in SGI.

Tough on the outside, soft on the inside
the perception of signaling the family firm status in a consulting context

Abstract: This work examines the consultants’ perception of family firms. Drawing on signaling theory, we investigated the impact of signaling the family firm status on the perception of consultants and how this affects their decision-making to work with family firms. To this end, we conducted an explorative choice experiment with N=179 consultants and collected qualitative data on the consultant’s motives to work with family firms to better understand the underlying cognitive mechanisms potentially explaining the results of the choice experiment. The results reveal empirical evidence of a bias towards family firms. In other words: consultants seem to favor family firms as clients over their non-family counterparts. Based on the qualitative data we were able to discover reasons for this finding and explore major decision criteria in favor or against family firms as clients of consultants.

Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Anette Karltun

Welcome to attend Anette Karltun's trial lecture for appointment as associate professor!

Titel:
Human information processing at the core of work performance

Abstract:
Human activity at work is at the core of work processes that makes things happen in a production system. Activity is guided by human information processing and decision-making. However, the increasing complexity in working life due to globalisation, increasingly sophisticated technology and higher demands on competitiveness, places higher demands on human resources at work, particularly cognitive information processing resources. The human abilities and limitations in this respect therefore need to be emphasized in organizing work and providing suitable technical equipment for good outcome.

In this lecture I provide lessons learned from several research projects that highlight the needs to develop supportive conditions for human performance at work. This includes designing usability-centred technical equipment, organising work by developing supportive infrastructure as well as facilitating interactions for frontline staff, between functions and hierarchal levels in order to achieve good quality, productivity and health at work.

EUFBC Seminar - Jasper Brinkerink

Centre for Family Business Management, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy) will host this event with a seminar titled:

"Prevalence and Predictors of P-Hacking in Family Business Research" presented by Jasper Brinkerink.

October 28, 12:00-13:00 CET

Link: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/68855796991

Abstract: Like many other academics, family business scholars face increasing pressures to publish in reputable journals, as an undesirable side-effect of which they might–knowingly or unknowingly–engage in p-hacking: the incremental and incompletely-disclosed adjustment of data collection, analysis, and/or reporting, until nonsignificant results turn significant. Analyses of the distribution of hypothesis-testing p-values published in three major family business journals suggest that p-hacking indeed also occurs in family business studies. Female authorship, the proportion of significant results among other hypothesis tests, and authors’ employer prestige associate negatively with p-hacking, while the negative association with employer prestige is reversed for untenured authors. Implications for family business research, as well as some suggestions going forward for authors, institutions, and journals and their editors, are discussed. While this study does not intend to discredit the achievements of the family business research community, it does hopefully inspire a more open discussion of the potential for biases to affect our work.

EUFBC Seminar - Katerina Vasilevska

Katerina Vasilevska, Doctoral Student at the Centre for Young and Family Enterprise (CYFE), University of Bergamo, will present the paper entitled “Work-family Initiatives and Innovation in Family and non-Family SMEs: Time to Explore the Missing Links?“. The paper is co-authored byTommaso Minola and Mara Brumana.

November 11, 12:00-13:00 CET

Link: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/68855796991

Abstract: The work-family initiatives are being adopted by organizations for a number of reasons and as such, they have been attracting the attention of the companies as well as that of the academia since few decades now. The work-family initiatives have been associated with a wide range of effects both on employees and on organizations, such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, work motivation as well as improved performance, decreased personnel turnover or improved shareholder returns. By offering work-family initiatives, companies show care towards their employees and their non-work concerns and are motivating them to participate more actively and more creatively in the work activities. However, what recent works highlight is that the link between WFI and broader entrepreneurial outcomes (such as, innovation, patenting or coping with technological discontinuities), has received scant attention. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between the degree of engagement in work-family initiatives and innovation performance in SMEs. Additionally, we explore whether and how family SMEs behave differently from non-family SMEs and the role of a number of family business contingencies, within the family SMEs subsample. Based on survey-based data from manufacturing SMEs in the Bergamo region, we find that overall, the relationship between work-family initiatives and innovation performance is positive. However, when considering family SMEs and some of their peculiarities (including: the degree of family involvement in ownership, management and governance; the coincidence between family and firm name; the family developmental dimension and generational involvement of family members) more nuanced results offer contribution to theory and research of family business, as well as practice.

Abstract:
Economic value of air quality improvements during COVID-19 lockdowns in Bogotá Air pollution is a leading cause of death worldwide, particularly affecting big cities in emerging economies. In this project, we estimate the effect of COVID-19 lockdowns on air quality in Bogotá. Using epidemiology models, we translate the air quality improvements into avoided deaths in the short and long run, and compare them with the additional COVID-19 related deaths. In addition, we quantify the economic value of the decreased mortality and explore the distributional, temporal, and spatial effects.

Nailing ceremony - Thomas Ekström

Due to the prevailing Covid 19 circumstances we are obliged to cancel Tomas Ekström’s nailing ceremony that should have taken place at the entrance of JTH on November 24th.

The nailing ceremony is an old tradition in which the thesis is made public and no changes may be done thereafter. A nailing ceremony must be done no later than 3 weeks before the public defence. However, in our modern times, we also make the thesis public digitally three weeks before the public defence and the nailing ceremony has become more of a nice tradition. Since the ceremony is cancelled you may get the thesis in the link: Doctoral thesis: Segmentation and Differentiation in Defence Supply Chain Design: A Dynamic Purchasing Portfolio Model for Defence Procurement. EUFBC Seminar - Alexander Fries

The presenter is Alexander Fries, Doctoral Student at the Institute of Family Business and Mittelstand, WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, in Germany. The paper is entitled “Being innovative and talking about it: Innovation signaling in m&a announcements of family firms”. Nadine Kammerlander is a co-author of this paper.

November 25, 12:00-13:00 CET

Link: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/68855796991

Abstract: Family firms have previously been found to be more efficient in creating innovation internally as compared to non-family firms because of their effective use of resources. Nevertheless, we do not sufficiently understand whether and how family firms signal their innovativeness towards the market to, e.g., enhance their reputation. We discuss this relationship in the context of M&A deal announcements of publicly listed firms. We hypothesize that true family firms mention more innovation in their deal announcements as compared to non-family firms while lone founder firms do so less. Moreover, we argue that being led by a family CEO strengthens this effect. We test our hypotheses based on a sample of 2,153 M&A deal announcements and find support for most of our hypotheses.

The Swedish Carbon Tax - guest lecture by Susanne Åkerfeldt, Senior Advisor, Swedish Ministry of Finance

Pricing carbon emissions is a way of making sure that the costs of pollution are paid for by those who cause it. Sweden has the highest rate of carbon tax in the world. It was introduced in 1991, alongside an already existing energy tax, and remains today a cornerstone of Swedish climate policy.

On 3 December, Susanne Åkerfeldt, Senior Advisor at the Swedish Ministry of Finance, will come and give a lecture entitled "The Swedish Carbon Tax – Why This is a Good Idea also for Developing Countries”, which will explore the lessons learnt from the last 26 years of carbon taxation in Sweden, and why this could work successfully across the globe.

MMTC Research Seminar presented by Mart Ots

MMTC Research Seminar

Mart Ots will present a seminar based on his paper entitled “Picturing markets: Observables and representational practices in the making of an Influencer market”.

Drawing on a social media data set covering a dramatic episode in the formation of the Swedish Influencer market, the paper explores the ‘observables’ being produced – representing alternative visualizations of what the market is, and how it functions. The paper suggests that observables play an important role in the shaping of nascent markets.

EUFBC Seminar - Issam Mejri

Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurhsip Issam Mejri from IPAG Business School, France will present a paper entitled: International Opportunity development by family firms in emerging markets.

Seminar #10 – December 9, 2020 – 12:00 CET

Abstract: This study explains how family firms recognize  international opportunities in emerging economies during institutional transition. It enriches our understanding of how family firms from well-established economies mobilize entrepreneurial resources to develop international opportunities when they confront the turbulent institutional environment of emerging economies.  We use the opportunity-based approach and an exploratory case study to explore the role of social capital, knowledge development and family involvement in the development of international opportunities. In this context, International market entry is conceptualized as an entrepreneurial act, opportunity recognition consists of both discovery as well as deliberate search. Finding suggests that opportunity recognition behavior will influence the entry mode choice into emerging economy markets. We emphasize that family firms that accidentally discover opportunities will be more inclined to use the IJV as a mode of entry into these distant markets. For family firms, mobilizing external business networks in local and hosting country is an important source of the knowledge necessary to recognize first international opportunities. The findings suggest also that family involvement is an important factor that influence the development of international opportunity.

Title of the lecture

Operations and Supply Chain Management - Research and Education for Impact

Abstract

The competitiveness of Swedish industries is highly dependent on the customer satisfaction and to deliver the products and services that the customers require. The competitiveness in turn is dependent on the ability to balance the sometimes contradicting goals of shortening the delivery lead time and increasing the possibility of adaptations and customizations. In order to be competitive, this requires efficient and succinct communication with customers in order to capture the customer order specific information. This information has to both be communicated internally at the manufacturer as well as transferred externally to suppliers. In this lecture I will present insights from collaborative research on customization and communication. I will also highlight the importance of collaboration, both between actors in the supply chain and between industry and academia in order to increase competitiveness and to realize impact.
